Hula Pahu

今日は6人の生徒さんがフラのパフを完成させるお手伝いをしました。クラスをするときはいつも、材料をすべて正しく準備する責任があるので、少し不安になります。ここ数週間、今日のクラス用にと印をつけた箱に道具や材料を入れていたので、何も忘れずに済んだことを報告できて嬉しいです。今日、生徒たちがパフを完成させるための最終工程は、やすりがけ、染色、ニスの塗布、そして皮をパフに結びつけることでした。パフを紐で結びつけるのは最も難しい工程の一つですが、生徒たちはすぐにやり方を覚え、一人で完成させることができました。

作品作りは競争でもレースでもありません。このパフも、他のどんな作品も、あなた自身の、忍耐力、成熟度、愛、感謝の気持ち、文化への理解、周囲との繋がり、そしてバランスと調和を反映しています。今できなくても、将来できないわけではありません。努力を続け、前進し続けなければなりません。

この短い時間でも、生徒たちのフラライフの一部になれたことをとても嬉しく思います。彼らには、パフを通してもっとマア（母）になり、そしてパフを通してホオマウ・ナ・フラ・アロハ・マイ・カ・ワ・カヒコ（母なるフラ）を踊るという、刺激的な旅が待っています。 アロハ　カヴェナ 

Today I helped and guided six students to complete their hula pahu. Whenever, I do a class, I feel a little anxiety because I'm responsible for correctly preparing all the materials. I'm happy to report I didnt forget anything since over the past few weeks I've been adding the tools and supplies to a box marked for todays class. Today, my students' final steps for completing their pahu were as follows: sanding, staining, applying nisu, and tying up the skin to the pahu. Tying up the pahu with cord is one of the most difficult steps, but my students could easily learn the method and complete the task on their own.

Making a craft isn't a competition and it's not a race. This pahu or any other craft is a reflection of you, your patience, your maturity, your love, your appreciation, your understanding of culture, your connection to your surrounding, and your balance and harmony. If you can't do it now, that doesn't mean you can't do it in the future. You have to keep trying and moving forward.

I'm so happy that i could be part of these students' hula life even for this brief moment. They have an exciting journey ahead which is to become more ma'a with their pahu and thus using their pahu to ho'omau na hula aloha mai ka wa kahiko.
