Poi
Hawaiian poi is the one food I can remember always eating since childhood. My parents fed us poi to help settle our stomachs when we had a sore tummy. When with our family from Waianae, they'd have 5-gallon buckets of poi in the refrigerator, and they'd set 3-4 large Tupperware bowls on a long table for all us keiki, aunties, and uncles to eat from, along with tons of freshly caught and fried fish. This kind of meal — eating fish and poi with the ohana — taught me several important things: be considerate of others, since in our family cooperation was an important value; have appreciation, because the fish was from the ocean my uncles had caught by free diving for hours; and have respect for the Makua and kupuna, since they never expected respect — they always showed and modeled love and care for us first. Now that I'm older, poi is still one of my favorite foods to eat. I love eating it and thinking about my ohana.
